Iraq and Bulgaria See New Opportunities for Joint Business and Investment
Opportunities for strengthening the economic partnership between Bulgaria and the Republic of Iraq were the focus of a working meeting between representatives of Iraqi diplomacy and businesses from Southern Bulgaria. The meeting was organized by the Haskovo Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
During the discussion, Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission of the Republic of Iraq in Sofia, Dr. Haider Haqi Alburiahi, emphasized his country’s interest in expanding cooperation with Bulgaria in areas such as trade, investment, industry, and tourism. He highlighted that Iraq is preparing to hold a session of the Bulgarian-Iraqi Joint Commission for Economic and Technical Cooperation, where specific mechanisms for deepening bilateral relations are expected to be discussed, including in the tourism sector.
During the meeting, the long-standing history of bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Iraq was recalled, as well as the traditional presence of Bulgarian companies in Iraq in the past. Healthcare, education, and modern industrial production were also identified as promising areas for future partnership.
Participants stressed the important role of regional institutions in strengthening the international contacts of local businesses. The Deputy Regional Governor of Haskovo, Bogdan Bogdanov, noted that such initiatives create real opportunities for connecting Bulgarian companies with foreign partners and for encouraging investment exchange.
For his part, the Chairman of the Haskovo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yancho Yanev, pointed out that active ties with Iraqi partners are already being maintained through the Chamber’s representation in Erbil. He informed that Bulgarian companies are successfully exporting to Iraq in sectors such as the food industry, mechanical engineering, agriculture, and infrastructure.
The main goal of the meeting was to stimulate the interest of Bulgarian businesses in the Iraqi market and to lay the foundations for future concrete projects and long-term cooperation between the two countries.
